Shadowing English

Shadowing English inside a real conversation — not a recording you cannot talk back to.

Shadowing means listening to natural speech and repeating it immediately, matching rhythm and phrasing. It works, but most shadowing material is a one-way recording. Talkexa gives you lines worth shadowing that answer you back: the tutor’s spoken reply, a better version of your own sentence, and a replay button for both.

How shadowing works in Talkexa

You say a sentence. The tutor answers out loud in natural English and, when your line needed it, includes a corrected version: “Better: I usually work out after work.” Tap replay to hear the reply again, then say the better sentence yourself. Because the corrected line is your sentence — your topic, your meaning — it sticks in a way that a textbook phrase does not.

Then the tutor asks a follow-up question and you keep talking. Shadowing becomes part of the conversation rather than a separate drill.

  • Spoken tutor replies you can replay as many times as you like
  • A better version of your own sentence to repeat
  • Natural phrasing suggestions, not just grammar fixes
  • Better sentences collected in your session report
  • Beginner, intermediate and advanced pacing

What to shadow

Shadow the corrected versions first: they are the sentences you were already trying to say. Then shadow the tutor’s questions — question intonation is where many learners sound most unnatural. The session report lists every better sentence from the conversation, so after you end you have a short personal shadowing list to read out loud once more.

Shadowing and pronunciation

Shadowing is the most practical way to work on pronunciation in Talkexa. The app does not score individual sounds; it transcribes what you say and corrects grammar, word choice and phrasing. What it does give you is a native-sounding model line, a replay button and a reason to say the sentence again. Listen, repeat, compare by ear, repeat once more.

Free every day

Every account gets 5 minutes of speaking on the first day and 3 minutes every day after that — enough for a short conversation with several lines to shadow. Premium gives 10 minutes a day with full conversation history, so you can return to earlier sessions and shadow their better sentences again; Pro Max gives 30 minutes a day.

Frequently asked questions

Is shadowing English effective?

Repeating natural speech immediately after hearing it is a well-established way to improve rhythm and phrasing. Talkexa makes the lines you shadow relevant by drawing them from your own conversation.

Can I replay the tutor?

Yes. Every tutor line has a replay button, so you can listen as many times as you need before repeating it.

Does Talkexa tell me if my pronunciation was right?

It does not score pronunciation. You compare by ear against the tutor’s line. Grammar, vocabulary and phrasing are corrected in the reply and in the session report.

Can I shadow in other languages?

Yes. Talkexa supports 16 practice languages; the same replay-and-repeat flow works in each.

Your first five minutes are free.

Talkexa is free to start on iPhone — 5 minutes of speaking today, then 3 minutes every day. Premium adds 10 minutes a day, Pro Max 30.
